Two neighbors went to Jupiter and prayed him to grant them boons. One was full of avarice, and the other was consumed with envy.
அடுத்தடுத்த வீட்டுக்காரர்கள் இருவர் ஜூபிடரிடம் சென்று வரம் கேட்னர். அதில் ஒருவர் பேராசையால் நிரம்பியவர், அடுத்தவரையோ பொறாமை தின்றுகொண்டிருந்தது.
Jupiter decided to punish them both. He said 'You might have whatever you wish for yourself. But there is a condition, your neighbour will have twice as much'.
அவர்கள் இருவரையும் ஜூபிடர் தண்டிக்கத் தீர்மானித்தார். 'உங்களுக்கு எது வேண்டுமோ அதைப் பெறலாம். ஆனால் ஒரு நிபந்தனை, உங்கள் அடுத்த வீட்டுக்காரருக்கு அது இரண்டு பங்கு கிடைக்கும்' என்றார்.
The Avaricious man prayed 'Lord, give me a room full of gold.' Even before he could complete his prayer, it was granted. But all his joy became grief when he found that his neighbour had two rooms full of glittering gold.
பேராசைக்காரர் 'தெய்வமே, எனக்கு ஓர் அறை நிரம்பத் தங்கம் கொடு' என்று பிரார்த்தித்தார். அவர் வேண்டி முடிப்பதற்குள் அது நிகழ்ந்துவிட்து. ஆனால் அடுத்த வீட்டுக்காரருக்கு இரண்டு அறைகள் நிரம்ப ஒளிரும் தங்கம் கிடைத்துவிட்டதைப் பார்த்து அவருக்கு மிகவும் துக்கமாகி விட்டது.
Then came the turn of the Envious man. He could not bear to see his neighbour's joy. So he prayed 'God, please take away one of my eyes.' Because, that would mean that his neighbor would become totally blind!
இப்போது பொறாமைக்காரரின் முறை வந்தது. அடுத்த வீட்டுக்காரர் மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருப்பதை அவரால் சகித்துக் கொள்ளவே முடியவில்லை. 'கடவுளே, எனது கண்களில் ஒன்றைக் குருடாக்கிவிடு' என்று அவர் வேண்டினார். ஏனென்றால், அப்போது அடுத்த வீட்டுக்காரரின் இரண்டு கண்களும் குருடாகிவிடுமே!
