The Lion and the Hare
Once a proud lion lived in a jungle. He used to kill many animals like deer and zebra. One day all the poor animals held a meeting. They requested a clever fox to speak to the lion on their behalf.
ஒரு காட்டில் கர்வமுள்ள சிங்கம் ஒன்று வசித்தது. அது மான், வரிக்குதிரை போன்ற பல மிருகங்களைக் கொன்று வந்தது. பாவம், எல்லா மிருகங்களும் ஒரு கூட்டம் கூடின. தந்திரமான நரியைத் தம் சார்பில் போய்ச் சிங்கத்திடம் பேசும்படி வேண்டிக் கொண்டன.
The fox met the lion and prayed "Your Majesty! We will send you one animal everyday, for your meal. Please, don't kill the other animals." The lion agreed to this plan.
நரி சிங்கத்தைச் சந்தித்து "மாட்சிமை தங்கிய மன்னரே! தினமும் ஒரு பிராணியை உங்களிடம் அனுப்புகிறோம். தயவுசெய்து மற்றவர்களைக் கொல்லாதீர்கள்" என்று வேண்டிக்கொண்டது. சிங்கம் இந்தத் திட்டத்துக்கு ஒத்துக்கொண்டது. |

One day, it was the turn of the hare, and so he went to the lion. "Why are you late?" growled the lion. The hare answered "Brave king! On my way I met a lion. He told me that he was the only king of this jungle." The lion roared "Who is that fool? Where is he? I will destroy him here and now."
அன்று, முயலின் முறை வந்தது. அது சிங்கத்திடம் போனது. "ஏன் தாமதமாக வந்தாய்" என்று சிங்கம் உறுமியது. "வீரமுள்ள ராஜாவே! வரும் வழியில் நான் ஓர் சிங்கத்தைப் பார்த்தேன். தான்தான் காட்டின் அரசன் என்று அது என்னிடம் கூறியது" என்றது முயல். "யாரந்த முட்டாள்? எங்கே அவன்? அவனை இப்போதே அழிப்பேன்" என்று சிங்கம் கர்ஜித்தது.
The hare led the lion to an old well. The lion looked down into the well. The still water reflected his image. But the foolish lion thought it was another lion! So he madly jumped into the well roaring, and was killed. The clever hare and all the other animals jumped for joy!
முயல் சிங்கத்தை ஒரு பழைய கிணற்றருகே கூட்டிச் சென்றது. கிணற்றுக்குள் எட்டிப் பார்த்தது சிங்கம். அதில் தேங்கியிருந்த தண்ணீரில் அதன் உருவம் தெரிந்தது. ஆனால் முட்டாள் சிங்கமோ அதை வேறொரு சிங்கம் என்று நினைத்தது! பெரும் கோபத்துடன் கர்ஜித்தபடி கிணத்துக்குள் பாய்ந்ததில் இறந்துபோனது. புத்திசாலி முயலும் மற்ற மிருகங்களும் சந்தோஷத்தில் துள்ளிக் குதித்தன. |
